Rotary Clubs superam desafio de arrecadar US$200 milhões

O Rotary International superou o desafio lançado pela Fundação Bill e Melinda Gates, que era arrecadar US$200 milhões em prol da erradicação da pólio, e até 17 de janeiro arrecadou US$202,6 milhões.

“Comemoramos a quantia arrecadada, mas isso não significa que vamos parar de levantar fundos ou conscientizar o mundo sobre a importância de se erradicar a pólio”, afirmou o curador da Fundação Rotária, John Germ, durante a conferência anual de líderes rotários. “Não podemos cessar até que o mundo inteiro esteja certificado como livre da pólio.”

Afghanistan‘s persistent polio transmission in its Southern Region blazed up in 2011. In addition, Afghanistan has been reinfected with wild poliovirus from Pakistan many times over the years, and 2011 saw this pattern continue. Undoing the progress seen in 2010, case numbers rose to 76 (all WPV1) – a three-fold increase over 2010.

A global emergency

As cases escalate in Nigeria and Pakistan, the world is facing an emergency – a resurgence of polio if the virus is not eradicated once and for all.  If the global effort to eradicate polio fails, within just a decade 250,000 children each year could be paralysed or die as a result of the disease. Prevention is so simple – just a couple of drops can save a life – yet the world has so far struggled to eradicate the disease once and for all. It is now or never for polio eradication.
